Atelier Ace took a restrained approach to its new hotel opening, Sister City in New York’s Lower East Side, which takes cues from traditional wooden saunas.

The bolthole is a change of pace for the in-house creative team responsible for Ace Hotel’s award-winning interiors. Inspiration for Sister City came from a diverse range of places according to the design team, which told CN Traveler it looked at everything from Finnish saunas and Japanese bento boxes, to prehistoric dwellings and John Cage’s silent track 4’33”.

Slatted wooden screens frame communal areas of the New York hotel – located next to the New Museum and officially slated to open on 16 May – which are tiled in geometric black and white patterns, and filled with a mix of contemporary and vintage furniture.

Sister City’s 200 bedrooms start from $259 per night and are similarly minimal, with striped bedding, Noguchi lanterns, and fold-down wooden storage that makes the most of limited space. Each room’s speaker is linked with the Headspace meditation app.
