Kunming cafe Ido & Friends is an ode to Bauhaus

Ido & Friends Cafe in Yunnan’s capital Kunming espouses the kind of functional, geometric design that Walter Gropius spent his life pioneering.

Local interior design studio Aurora Design oversaw the space, using lines and shapes to create order and harmony inside the cafe. Grid patterns dominate Ido & Friends, from the glass bricks that divide the rooms to the tiled flooring and the carefully ordered shelves.

Much of the furniture was created by the studio, including a striking set of chairs with cut-out backs and tables that can bolt directly onto benches. An abundance of wood, including wall panelling in different shades, gives the cafe a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be Bauhaus without a little chrome, which appears in table stems, office chairs and panels around the doorway.
