Inside Làlia: Palma’s first private members’ club

The historic townhouse was decorated by Tatjana von Stein and is suffused with opulent jewel tones

The first-ever private member’s club has arrived in Palma, Mallorca, in a historic townhouse overlooking Plaça de Santa Eulàlia. A place for working, playing and learning, Làlia cascades down four elegant levels decorated in rich jewel tones and locally sourced furnishings.

Local architects Gras Reynès Arquitectos led a skilful renovation of the building in alignment with old town criteria. The firm paid close attention to heritage elements, salvaging and repurposing tiles, carpentry and fireplaces wherever possible.

Taking their lead, London-based designer Tatjana von Stein headed up the interiors, paying homage to the vibrant colours of the Balearics with her pared-back sophisticated style. The French-German designer carved out a boutique gym, sleek bar and private exhibition spaces with surprise details like leopard-print floors and checkerboard ceilings. She recruited Mallorcan artisans to handcraft nearly every detail, from fitted furnishings to ceramics.

To establish a distinctly Mallorquín setting, she added local vintage finds from Dusty Deco and the beloved concept store Lasanta & Co., peppering unique pieces throughout the club.

As they flow through the spaces, members encounter comfy stools by La Pecera, wooden tables by Ducoin Studio and timber benches fabricated to resemble heritage street furniture. Ceilings and banquettes are draped in local fabrics from Textil Bujosa, and bathrooms feature bespoke sinks by D’Aigo, hand-carved from local Binissalem stone. The building’s original tiles were reinvented as water fountains and, in the garden, von Stein worked with renowned stonemason Diego Sanchez Barcelo on a multifaceted hand-carved bench.

Làlia’s cultural programme centres around music, business, art in the third-floor gallery and food at the in-house farm-to-table restaurant, which brings in produce from its own farm, Son Fiol. Weekends feature a schedule of family-friendly activities.

Formerly working under the name Sella Concept, von Stein founded her eponymous brand in 2023 and added an eight-piece furniture collection called Mise en Scène, produced in collaboration with some of France’s finest artisans.
