Opulent Gilded Age mansion on NYC’s Upper East Side lists for $65m

Its lavish interiors speak to the grandeur and excess of the period

Fans of Julian Fellowes’ HBO hit Gilded Age can feast their eyes on this opulent New York mansion, with its period details intact and an eye-watering $65m price tag to match.

The Upper East Side mansion is located at 15 East 63rd Street and was built in 1901 for millionaire Elias Asiel, who rose to prominence in the late 19th century as the head of the brokerage firm Asiel & Co. He commissioned architect John H. Duncan to design the 18,000 sq ft Beaux-Arts mansion to replace an ‘out-of-fashion’ brownstone rowhouse on the site, taking inspiration from Parisian architecture to craft the lavish home. It boasts seven bedrooms and 12 full bathrooms.

Many other wealthy Gilded Age dynasties, including the Bloomingdales (of department store fame) and the Woolworths, lived on the street.

The exclusive New York property has been owned by the Cassini family since 1984. Oleg Cassini famously conceived the ‘Onassis look’ for former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and used the home as his studio. The fashion designer was a fan of Gilded Age architecture, having also lived in a 7,000 sq ft Gothic Gramercy Park townhouse at 135 East 19th Street until he died in 2006. The Manhattan property’s location, prestige and price tag are enhanced by the rarity of authentic Gilded Age mansions, as many were razed in the 1920s.
