From sacred space to striking residence: a converted chapel in Sweden’s Västra Götaland County

This converted church offers grand proportions and historic charm in Västra Götaland County, Western Sweden.

The Norrmannebo Chapel was built in 1919 and served the local community for 100 years before being transformed into a private residence in 2014. While it now has a new role, its 250 sqm interiors thoughtfully preserve the building’s past—starting in the former nave, which has been reborn as a lofty, light-filled living and dining space crowned by a swooping timber-arched ceiling.

Original plank floorboards and decorative moldings remain intact, along with painted frescoes, including calligraphy and archangels that preside over the living room. A large kitchen island now stands where the altar once was, while the sacristy has been converted into a guest or family room.

On the upper level, the former organ loft has been transformed into two bedrooms that overlook the living room through a glass balcony. Pernilla Berger of Bjurfors Kungälv is marketing the converted chapel for SEK 6.5m (approximately €5.831m).
