This 1977 modernist home cuts a sharp profile in the Burgundy countryside

The split-level home by Milan Tontic perches on a hillside

Think of the French countryside and shuttered châteaux and rolling vineyards spring to mind. But this mid-century home in Bussy-en-Othe, Burgundy, marches to the beat of its own modernist drum.

Designed by architect Milan Tontic and completed in 1977, the 145 sq m brick-and-concrete home is for sale exclusively via Architecture de Collection for €750,000. It perches on a hillside, offering panoramic vistas over the surrounding countryside.

Tontic’s modernist design features a flat, brutalist concrete roof atop brick expanses, bookended by crisp, sloping walls that connect to the earth.

Inside, living spaces are arranged across several half-levels that further integrate the house with the outdoors. The entrance leads directly into the living room, while the kitchen and dining room are staggered below. Sliding glass doors open to the first of several terraces and the outdoor swimming pool.

The three-bedroom French property has been modernised but retains its original 1970s charm in spades. It sits on a plot of 3,300 sq m, landscaped with 50-year-old trees planted around the time of its construction.

It’s around 35 minutes from Auxerre and Sens and around two hours from Paris.
