‘Brexit blue’ was the shade for Balenciaga’s provocative SS/20 Paris show yesterday, inside Luc Besson’s Cité du Cinema studio complex in the suburbs of St Denis.

Creative director Demna Gvasalia opted for a tiered amphitheatre set design by La Mode en Images, reminiscent of the European Parliament chamber and drenched in a bright blue shade evoking the Leave campaign.

Models sported polo shirts and oversized coats with exaggerated shoulders, puffed-up jackets and Balenciaga ‘VIP’ lanyards. They wove their way past benches of spectators, seated in the round.

Then came the ballgowns: dramatic monochrome crinoline numbers, with giant hoop skirts, as well as reflective Lurex fabrics that hinted at the political drama of the times.
