Artfully done: this Paris apartment has links to the Statue of Liberty

The sound of chisels could be heard ringing through this pocket of Paris in the 1870s as Auguste Bartholdi and his team crafted the Statue of Liberty in its ateliers before the colossal sculpture was transported to its final resting place on New York’s Liberty Island. Those industrial-scale workshops have since been transformed into characterful living spaces, including this one-of-a-kind residential loft next to Parc Monceau.

The building dates from the late 19th century and solely comprises ateliers, keeping with the street’s storied history as a centre of creative industry. The neoclassical statue loomed large over Paris between 1881 and 1884 as it was completed and assembled in the city ahead of its transportation across the Atlantic. The statue would have been visible from the 89 sq m top-floor apartment, which features towering glass windows with French doors leading out to a terrace.

Its reception area is free-flowing, with a carved floor-to-ceiling fireplace taking centre stage, flanked by wood-panelled walls and parquet floors underfoot. Adjacent is the kitchen, a semi-enclosed space that contrasts with the late-19th-century features of the living-dining area through baby blue cupboards, white tiles, and turquoise grouting that injects a cheerful burst of colour.

A carved wooden staircase leads to the upper level, where there’s a home office and an en-suite bedroom set beneath a coffered ceiling.

Jeudi Paris Real Estate is the listing agent for this one-bedroom Paris property, with an asking price of €1.89m. The loft is in a quiet residential area of the city, well situated for walks in the adjacent Parc Monceau and visits to Marché Poncelet.
