A rooftop ‘theatre’ has opened up next to the canal in East London

Maich Swift Architects has designed this year’s annual Antepavilion in East London – a brightly coloured Potemkin Theatre that will host everything from comedy shows to soapbox speeches inside.

The building is easily spotted from the canal in Haggerston, thanks to its yellow and green chequerboard canvas covering and the bright red beacon it turns on at night.

It took just a month to assemble the pavilion’s wooden framework, which is reminiscent of theatre sets. The building is partially open, and the architects hope this means it will attract attention from passersby on the canal, who can catch a glimpse of a show, as well as visitors to the rooftop.

There’s already a programme of events in place for the Theatre, which will be hosting Beacon Festival during August and September.
