Worn and weathered interiors are served at this Ho Chi Minh City coffee shop

Đen Đá Quang Trung is wrapped in a patinated skin

The weathered materials of Ho Chi Minh City’s historic architecture inspired the mossy green exterior of Đen Đá Quang Trung.

KSOUL Studio designed the Vietnamese coffee shop, rooting it in the colours and materials of a bygone era. The studio says the space creates ‘the atmosphere from both old and modern Saigon’.

Đen Đá’s patinated green exterior continues inside the cafe, where it joins a colour and materials palette of burnt yellow, brickwork, rattan chairs and steel furniture. The interior is arranged to feel like a ‘real home’, with terracotta tiles creating a patterned grill that filters in daylight. According to the studio, the bricks were chosen to reference traditional wooden stoves.

The coffee shop also has its own rooftop, where guests can gather around a sizeable communal table to watch the sunset.
