South African artist Wilma Cruise puts her Cape Town home on the market

A soaring barrel-arched volume forms the centrepiece of this contemporary Cape Town home, which belongs to the South African artist Wilma Cruise and is on sale for $1.74m.

The equestrian South African estate is a modern interpretation of vernacular Cape Dutch architecture. It lies on De Goede Hoop estate in a mountainous setting and includes Cruise’s studio, stables, staff quarters, a small forest and a freshwater spring.

Named De wild Hoek, the three-bedroom Cape Town property – on sale with Christie’s International Real Estate – has two barn-like volumes whose gable ends form a striking white-plaster front façade. They are linked by a central, curved form with a brick arch enclosing glazing and a timber front door.

Behind the entrance lies a barrel-vaulted gallery space, which directly connects to the artist’s practice through its use of materials (Cruise creates her life-sized human and animal figures from fired clay). Elsewhere are high, vaulted living spaces lit by clerestory windows and a decked outdoor pool.
