Wild nature and seclusion take centre stage at eco-conscious retreat Praia do Canal in the Algarve’s Vicentine Coast, just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean and set within a 220-hectare private natural reserve.
In this hidden patch of land, architect João Favila Menezes from practice Atelier Bugio created a retreat that embodies the essence of slow living through a project that serves as a masterclass in architectural simplification and restraint, all while respecting the natural landscape of the region.

The 59-room resort revolves around a sequence of sandstone-hued concrete cubic towers, which house the suites, along with a central, elevated monolithic structure that sits atop the highest point, overlooking the rugged landscape of the park and the plunge pool. Clusters of private villas scatter throughout the estate.
The connection to nature pervades the experience, from the check-in at the sun-drenched, tranquil lobby with its vast relaxation area and bar, to the outdoor terrace, where guests can indulge in a glass of wine while taking in the views.

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the suites feel like oases. Constança de Castro Fernandes’s design flawlessly balances texture, material and light to create a space that soothes the senses. The thoughtful design features an earthy palette and natural textures like wood and rattan. Wide window openings make the transition between indoor and outdoor spaces seamless, opening up to the park that overlooks the ocean.
The two in-house restaurants, Azeitona and Zimbro, feature rustic furnishings and menus packed with flavour, highlighting locally grown plants and herbs. This theme carries over to the cocktail bar, Medronho, where blue walls, colourful hanging lamps and wooden furniture detour from the main design perspective, making the atmosphere more sophisticated and playful at the same time.
There’s also an extensive swimming pool surrounded by lush greenery, which provides breathtaking views of the park. It serves as the central hub of the resort, where guests gather after hiking or surfing at Praia do Canal beach. Meanwhile, the spa offers an extra opportunity for relaxation. It blends concrete and marble elements with soft, creamy shades, wooden accents and lush greenery that reflects the holistic approach of the retreat itself.
