Leather and ikebana. // Touchdown in sunny, stormy Cartagena — a handful of Miami layover mishaps + two colourful plane conversations later. Far too convoluted before we even hit the ground, but when we do, it’s first things first, i.e. knuckling my way into a car pool with fluent Spanish speakers after a minor meltdown at the money exchange. Then a hasty search for the first Colombian coffee I can bury my head into (not least because the electricity is wonky in Getsemaní when I arrive — in the words of a new friend, “welcome to Latin America”). . The short story is here I am. Intact. Tasting soursop juice and bathing in caffeine in an immediately endearing library cafe — the kind with harsh, dim lighting, the consolation of whirring fans, and Gabriel García Marquez’s magical realist world. (Given how today’s events unfolded, I can relate.) And later I’ll stride up and brave the supermarket ATM, sit down, break bread, dig into the ceviche Bourdain made me love. Hit the disco (cumbia-only) and find a good street empanada. A rocky and optimistic start.
