I bet you 100$ that upon seeing this library photo, northeastern Romania in the region of Moldova would not be in your top 5 guesses. Correct? Heck, not even in your top 20. But in fact, this spectacular library is to be found in the city of Iasi, which I properly visited for the first-time last week. Voted the most beautiful library in the world according to a survey done by @boredpanda, the Gheorghe Asachi Library is located in the Technical University of Iasi, in Copou, as part of the University Palace dating from 1892. Designed by Swiss architect Louis Blanc (off the sketches of a Romanian architect), this hall instantly took me back to Trinity College in Dublin – a similar antiques smell, old-world atmosphere and an impressive one million volumes inside – BUT no crowds. The library is always open for students, and free to visit to anyone, and fortunately or not, still largely unknown to the masses. Had a friend not tipped me into going, I would have been just as clueless. And this is exactly why I love to explore less-known sights, up-and-coming destinations, and ask for local insight when arriving in a new place. Thank you @metropolis_architecture for the tip ??
