Toronto’s Prime Seafood Palace is a perfect serve of Japandi minimalism

Maple-wrapped interiors by architect Omar Gandhi are serene and sauna-like

A hearty menu of steak and seafood is offset by ‘light-as-air’ interiors at this new Toronto restaurant on Queen Street West.

Chef/owner Matty Matheson and architect Omar Gandhi designed Prime Seafood Palace together, turning its barrel-shaped interiors into a calming, wood-lined dining room.

The pair brought in an impressive 900lb of maple slats, which emphasise the Toronto restaurant’s curving ceiling and create built-in shutters for the windows. Wood panelling dominates the space, set off by brass light fittings and rails, as well as a set of curved leather-upholstered banquettes.

Dining chairs draped in sheepskin, a wood burner and a stash of logs add a Scandi twist to a separate dining area, known as ‘The Cottage’.

There’s a long list of seafood on offer at the aptly named Prime Seafood Palace including Dungeness crabs, sea urchins and Humboldt squid, as well as prime rib.
