Art collective teamLab has cooked up an immersive multi-sensory installation that heightens the experience of eating inside a Tokyo restaurant.

Worlds Unleashed and Then Connecting takes over the interiors of Saga Beef restaurant Sagaya-Ginza, combining taste and smell with colourful projections of Japanese scenery for an interactive dining experience.

‘When a dish is placed on the table, the scenic world contained within the dish is unleashed, unfolding onto the table and into the surrounding space,’ says the collective.

Walls and tables are canvases for projections as ceramic birds ‘take flight’ from plates, perching on tree branches that have ‘escaped’ from other dishes.

The permanent installation – which picks up on a temporary artwork the collective debuted in 2015 – is inspired by Japan’s changing seasons. It will evolve alongside the menu of the exclusive restaurant, which serves just eight people per day, on a monthly basis.

TeamLab’s recent London show, ‘Transcending Boundaries’, was among our top picks of exhibitions to see this year.
