One of the most majestic castle conversions in modern times, Château la Coste showcases site-specific contemporary art and architecture alongside ruined 15th-century walls. Its rolling programme of exhibitions, set in the Provençal estate, is coveted worldwide – as is the estate’s vineyard, with its Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium, designed just two years before the architect’s death in 2012.
Niemeyer lives large at La Coste, so it’s no surprise he’ll be celebrated this summer together with a French design icon and natural bedfellow. Opened on 29 May, Pierre Paulin Program: Des idées courbes, Des formes libres showcases the French furniture designer’s progressive, timeless designs in dialogue with Niemeyer’s architecture, with an emphasis on the curved lines both are known for.
Paulin’s midcentury residential concept Pierre Paulin Program, finally realised in 2014, will be the focus of the exhibition. Models, modules and furnishings conceived more than 50 years ago will be set up in Niemeyer’s auditorium, where visitors can celebrate their simplicity, functionality, modernity and relevance even today.
Pierre Paulin Program runs through 3 September 2023.
