A new cultural space will be opening in south London as part of the £8 billion Battersea Power Station development.

Battersea Arts Centre is partnering the regeneration project to help create Village Hall – a venue that will host events, workshops and performances – and organise its cultural programme.

‘I think this venture demonstrates the value of culture for our communities, old and new,’ says David Jubb, artistic director of Battersea Arts Centre. ‘We want culture and creativity to be at the heart of civic life in Battersea and Wandsworth.’

Expected to be ready in late 2016, Village Hall forms part of the development’s first phase, designed by dRMM Architects and SimpsonHaugh (formerly Ian Simpson Architects). Battersea Arts Centre will advise on its design to ensure a fit-for-purpose space.

The wider Battersea development – master-planned by architect Rafael Viñoly – has a host of cultural and event spaces mapped out across its 42-acre site in addition to Village Hall.

LDA Design’s six-acre riverfront park will host theatre shows and festivals while Battersea Power Station’s revamp, designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, includes the 2000-person Boiler House venue.

The restored Control Room A – a public space inside the power station – can also stage exhibitions, installations and even fashion shows.
