Brutalism is really having a moment. Following The Brutalist Playground exhibition at the RIBA, the National Trust is the latest group to celebrate the UK’s concrete structures with Brutal Utopias – a 10-day programme of events running from 25 September.

Festivities include expert-led tours of London’s Southbank Centre, Sheffield’s Park Hill Estate and the University of East Anglia in Norwich. Visitors will see spaces within these buildings that have never been open to the public.

There will also be Routemaster bus tours of the capital’s concrete landmarks, starting at the Southbank Centre and stopping at the Lansbury Estate, the Barbican, Alexandra Road Estate and Trellick Tower along the way.

‘Love it or not, Brutalism was the dominant post-war architectural movement that sought to offer the best of design to the masses through public housing schemes, new universities and venues for the arts and education that were accessible to all,’ says the National Trust. ‘Fifty years on, Brutal Utopias reconsiders this era.’
