Beloved Fitzroy institution The Brooklyn Arts Hotel has listed in Melbourne with a guide price of $4.2m.
Founded by filmmaker and designer Maggie Fooke, the colourful 14-room boutique hotel has attracted a community of local artists and creatives visiting the city, and according to an interview with The Design Files, she intends to wrap operations for the hotel early next year.
The ecclesiastical gothic style building was built in 1865 and expanded by American entrepreneur Joseph Levy. It has a double-loggia facade, which makes it one of the most striking heritage structures along George Street, and its rooms have a cache of late 19th century features.
It’s being auctioned on 14 September via Nelson Alexander, and is touted for conversion into a massive single-family home, ‘with scope (STCA) for the creation of a second residence’, says the agent. In the meantime, the Melbourne property can be viewed strictly by appointment.
