Bask in colour this winter at Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Liz West’s joyful installation brings colour theory to the old chapel

Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s historic chapel is awash with colour this month, thanks to a new site-specific work by artist Liz West that blankets its floors in colourful discs and its walls in reflections.

Our Colour Reflection is a vibrant antidote to the winter blues and was unveiled to coincide with Wakefield’s Our Year Light Up festival. Like coloured confetti, hundreds of coloured discs are strewn across the YSP’s 18th-century chapel’s floor at different heights to capture and emit natural and artificial light.

Their shiny surfaces reflect shimmering light up the building’s pillars, walls and ceilings.

West is a Wakefield native and draws inspiration from colour theory for her vibrant, cheerful light works, conceived as immersive sensory experiences for all ages. Visitors to the installation are encouraged to bask in the vibrant colours through the dreary winter months.

Liz West: Our Colourful Reflection is supported by Wakefield Council, Our Year —a year-long programme of creativity across Wakefield—and lighting company formalighting Ltd. It is on show at Yorkshire Sculpture Park until 5 January 2025.
