Private island-owners are in a league of their own, but an opportunity to join the club recently presented itself in the form of this Swedish island, 30 miles from the centre of Stockholm.
Part of the Värmdö archipelago, on Kanholms fjord, the slender skerry comes with a suite of cottages designed by Stockholm architect John Robert Nilsson. The main residence overlooks the sandy bay from a wall of French doors. Inside, the open floor plan includes a new kitchen and breakfast island with light wood cabinetry leading onto a dining space and lounge. Three bedrooms share two bathrooms and new built-in laundry facilities.
A guest house by a pair of sturdy docks has a further two bedrooms with a bathroom and glass-walled sauna house with its own porch and fireplace. Past the bathing cliffs, a final ‘party barn’ is long and open, designed for large gatherings – the sheltered harbour has space for several boats to dock. The property is pre-rigged with desalination and treatment facilities, as well as camera surveillance, masked by windswept pines and tall wild grasses.
Only serious applicants will find out the cost, via Per Jansson.
