JR liberates the gallery of Florence’s Palazzo Strozzi with giant 3D street installation

Arches, statues and paintings appear to burst through the facade of Florence’s Palazzo Strozzi – a new perspective-bending installation by artist JR.

The artwork, titled ‘La Ferita’ (The Wound), highlights the importance of making culture accessible to all – a message with added significance following the international closure of museums and galleries during the pandemic.

To create the towering 28-metre-high amorphous artwork, JR used black and white photographs to create a collage of the gallery’s interiors, reframed by the Renaissance building’s ornate exterior.

The installation inaugurates the Palazzo Strozzi Future Art Programme, an annual public art commission that promotes international artists by bringing them to Florence to create a site-specific work.

La Ferita is on display until 22 August 2021.
