Life imitates art at this off-grid compound in Joshua Tree

The seller is Wendy Wacker of the Chicago planning family

There are 160 acres of open desert surrounding this Joshua Tree compound. The off-grid homestead sits as a series of low, sculptural pavilions designed by Northworks in collaboration with writer Wendy Wacker, great-granddaughter of the Chicago city planner Charles H Wacker. She guided the project from its earliest sketches, shaping a home with deep respect for site. Completed in 2017, it is remarkably self-sufficient, tracking the sun’s movement across the Mojave landscape.

The main house, casita, studio spaces and dedicated listening room spread out over a combined 4,240 square feet, connected by open-air corridors and sheltered courtyards. Radiant-heated floors, concrete, steel and broad panels of glass create a restrained interior palette that blends into the expansive desert views. A wellness retreat, art studio, rooftop viewing deck and acoustically tuned music room extend the property, while the photovoltaic array and wind turbine form a micro-grid that supports fully autonomous living.

Landscaped terraces lead to a heated lap pool that is set low against the horizon. A study in form, light and landscape, the property is offered together with its self-sustaining systems, guest accommodation and desert frontage. It’s listed for $14.995m with Charlie Price Group.
