Inspired by the king of geodesic design, Buckminster Fuller, this high desert dome home is designed to capture 360-degree mountain and valley views.

The desert dome is located in California’s Joshua Tree, in the Upper Friendly Hills. It sits on a remote 2.5-acre site dotted with boulders and otherworldly cacti. The dome home was built in 1983 and has been fully renovated as an Airbnb, popular with musicians thanks to its unique acoustics.

Dome homes are still considered eccentric in an age when we expect residential architecture to be square and relatively standard. But their oddity is exactly their appeal.

Inside, 7677 Wilton Road has soaring ceilings and sprung wood floors. The ground floor is arranged in an unfussy, flowing layout that maximizes the sense of volume. Large hexagonal windows cut into the roof increase light in the living room and frame giant cut-outs of the sky.

On this level, the kitchen, living room, and dining room can be found, as well as the first of four bedrooms. A spiral staircase leads to three more large bedrooms, each with triangular windows that look across the property’s grounds.

Speaking of, there’s a propane-style fire pit outside and a hot tub for stargazing in the evening.

April Kass of Backbeat Homes lists the desert hideaway for $899,000, but if you want to ‘try before you buy’, it’s available via Airbnb from $350 per night.
