This palatial Sicilian holiday home is as spectacular as its panoramic views of Mount Etna.

Rocca delle Tre Contrade was built in the 1850s as a grand country retreat and winery for an aristocratic family. It was later abandoned and fell into ruin before current owners Jon Moslet and Marco Scire began a three-year restoration project to bring it back to its former glory.

‘We had a clear view of the sky where the roof had once been!’ said Moslet of the 12-bedroom villa, which was revived with the help of local craftsmen.

Interiors feature reclaimed lava stone, marble, and terracotta. Five living areas are spread over the property’s ground floor, connected by tall arches and vaulted ceilings, and dotted with Moroccan rugs and antique furniture.

Elsewhere, old wooden beams and door frames were refashioned into a large dining room table and mirrors inside the Italian holiday home, which is available to rent as a serviced property on a weekly basis exclusively via The Thinking Traveller.

Rocca delle Tre Contrade sits within a sprawling estate that’s been planted with aromatic lemon groves, vegetable patches, herb gardens and orchards – fodder for the property’s kitchen. In March, Michelin-star chef Skye Gyngell was in residence, giving cooking classes.

The Sicilian villa also falls within the border of the Etna national park – and views of the sputtering volcano and Ionian Sea can be seen from across the property. A dramatic infinity pool perches proudly on the hillside.
