Sitting on a hill in the heart of the Balinese jungle, Villa Chameleon is named for its canny ability to blend with its lush surrounds.
The Brutalist villa was designed by Word of Mouth founder Valentina Audrito for an Australian family, and perches on a tree-covered plot between Canggu and Tanah Lot. The four-bedroom holiday home blurs eastern and western design principles, unfurling as a series of interconnected volumes that use the traditional Balinese concept of ‘pavilions for function’.
Villa Cameleon is available to rent via Airbnb from $650 per night, and the main house contains the living spaces, while two smaller pavilions contain guest bedrooms and an indoor pool.
Huge floor-to-ceiling windows maintain the connection with the outdoors by framing panoramic views of the tree canopy and the Bali holiday home’s private garden, while the structure’s volumes bed into the hillside thanks to their grass covered roofs.
The use of natural materials continues inside the pavilions with teak surfaces, which have been paired with cool concrete floors, grey walls and textiles, and a smattering of vintage furniture.
A fifth bedroom doubles as a wellness space for yoga and meditation, and there’s a 20-metre-long swimming pool set into the landscape if you want to take a dip. Alternatively, the contemporary holiday home is just 15 minutes drive from the beach and the restaurants of Canggu. But if you prefer to dine in, the house comes fully serviced with a cook, housekeeper, gardener and a driver – available on request.
