Following a full renovation, the centuries-old La Maison d’Estournel is once again opening its doors to guests visiting the Bordeaux wine region.

The vast stone chateau and winery has a colourful history, once home to Louis Gaspard d’Estournel – who was known as the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe, thanks to the thriving business he set up selling ‘Returned from India’ wines.

This is reflected in some of the boutique hotel’s more eccentric features, including sandstone pagodas, a gateway carved with flowers and grapes – transported from a sultan’s palace in Zanzibar – and stone elephants that guard the cellars.

There are 14 rooms on offer in the newly refurbed hotel, which also has a tasting room, library and restaurant. Guests can gaze over the surrounding five acres of vineyards, from rooms decked out with velvet furniture, dark floorboards, and – if you reserve the Estournel room – a freestanding tub.
