Visitors to Milan Design Week can step briefly into Eileen Gray’s shoes thanks to furniture brand ClassiCon, which has created a full-scale replica of the master bedroom at the designer’s storied E-1027 villa.
One of the highlights of this year’s Salone del Mobile, the installation invites guests to experience Gray’s original creative choices – all made in the late 1920s when she designed the holiday home together with lover Jean Badovici.
The villa itself, located in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in the south of France, reopened in 2021 after a five-year renovation. It was Gray’s first building and went on to enjoy a turbulent and controversial life.
Gray designed the majority of the furniture in the villa, with many of these bespoke E-1027 pieces still in production and sold by ClassiCon. The brand says the replica bedroom is a chance for visitors to ‘directly experience the interplay of spatial proportions, materials, colours and pieces of furniture.
The installation is on display from 6 to 12 June at Brera’s Galleria Antonio Colombo.
