Creative duo Arakawa and Madeline Gins’ brightly coloured Bioscleave House, aka the Life-Span Extending Villa, has hit the market in New York State for $2.495m.

The four-bedroom sculptural home in East Hampton was commissioned by art collector Angela Gallman in 2007. It brings together 50 years of research into how architecture can stave off mortality by encouraging users to maintain their health and flexibility, and challenge themselves physically.

Conceived as an ‘interactive’ laboratory for living, Bioscleave House is actually two connected properties. The front part of the complex is a Bauhaus-inspired cottage designed by architect Carl Koch in the 1960s. The creative duo overhauled it and extended it with a 2,700 sq ft volume at the back, which has surreal volumes and colours, and haphazardly placed windows.

Arakawa and Madeline Gins – who were protégés of Marcel Duchamp – installed a bobbly, rammed-earth floor which tests balance and stimulates the feet. Meanwhile 52-colour shades used throughout 3,400 sq ft the East Hampton property invigorate the eyes, and furniture is designed almost like a playground.
