Cult São Paulo book store Desculpe a Poeira gets a refresh

A Tardis-like trove of books, vinyl and CDs

Desculpe a Poeira first opened its doors in São Paulo’s Pinheiros neighbourhood back in 2014, and to celebrate the beloved micro bookstore’s 10-year anniversary, founder Ricardo Lombardi has revamped its interiors.

Lombardi is a journalist and former editor-in-chief of the arts title BRAVO! Much of Desculpe a Poeira’s stock comes from his personal collection  (the shop’s name, ‘Sorry my dust’ is taken from a Dorothy Parker quote.) He tapped local practice Nitsche Arquitetos to refresh the bookstore, which is housed in the 18 sq m garage of his mother’s home in the leafy suburb.

Working with such a small footprint was a tricky prospect for the studio. It has focussed on optimising circulation in the micro-space by installing a central bookcase in the space, with LED lighting and a galvanised metal finish. More shelving has been added to the walls, with fixed positions for furniture.

While it’s definitely a minimalist’s nightmare, the tiny bookshop has maximised its volume as much as possible to house over 4,000 books, magazines, vinyl records and CDs.

The practice also added an iron-frame door at the entrance, which pays homage to the traditional facades found throughout the city.
