A renovated chapel hits the market in the Cotswolds

When it comes to inspiring homes, church conversions are in a league of their own, boasting lofty proportions and unrivalled histories. In the Cotswolds, the Grade II-listed Chapel House goes a step further, blending striking architecture and ecclesiastical features with contemporary interiors and eco-interventions that maximise it for modern living.

The Wiltshire property dates back to 1862 and sits at the heart of the picture-postcard village of North Wraxall, built in a rural ‘rubble stone’ style. It has undergone four years of extensive restoration and has been finished by the founder of Nune.

Inside, the chapel has been reborn as a double-height kitchen and dining room with vaulted ceilings, tall arched sash windows on all sides (with added secondary glazing to boost energy efficiency), and rustic oak floorboards underfoot. Hanging pendant lamps highlight the volume of the space, while inscriptions from the old church have been retained as a marker of the building’s former life.

Atelier Cabinet Makers designed the bespoke kitchen with a classic country Aga on one side and a dining table at the other end of the room.

Chapel House is for sale via Inigo for £1.75m, and it offers four bedrooms, with a playroom offering a potential firth (plus the converted basement could be used as a guest suite.)

A glass walkway connects the chapel to a modern extension at the rear, which is clad in Siberian larch. It’s taken on a silvery hue that jibes with the rustic stonework of the original building.

The rest of the house is decorated in a similarly serene colour scheme by Paint & Paper Library, including the panelled living room and a second reception room with a log-burning stove and custom oak shelving.

While hidden from view, the house’s core systems have all been upgraded for energy efficiency, including plumbing, underfloor heating, insulation, glazing, roofing, and new electrics. The house is surrounded by gardens by Marian Boswall, including a sustainably heated, chemical-free swimming pool and wildflower meadows.
