Bjarke Ingels reveals a radical hotel vision for the Marfa desert

’Primordial’ 3D printed homes are coming to the art mecca

Bjarke Ingels Group has teamed up with 3D printing specialist ICON to design a cluster of 3D-printed homes for nomadic Texas campsite and hotel, El Cosmico.

The sandy-coloured Sunday Homes dwellings are the latest addition to the campground – which already offers a range of tents, trailers and teepees, all off-grid – as it moves to a new 62-acre spot in Marfa.

According to El Cosmico founder Liz Lambert, the homes blend 3D-printing technology with traditional raw earth-based building techniques and will include domes, arches, vaults and parabolic shapes. ICON says that its technology is uniquely placed to create this ‘primordial architectural language’.

‘Organic shapes, Euclidean circular geometries and a colour palette born from the local terroir makes El Cosmico feel as if literally erected from the site it stands on,’ says BIG founder Bjarke Ingels.

Early renders of the structures, which are slated to take bookings later this year, emphasise their curvaceous forms, with sleeping areas cocooned in arcing walls and located beneath an oculus. Guests will be able to check into two, three or four-bedroom homes, all of which include access to El Cosmico’s pool, spa and other shared facilities.

Early bird registration of interest is open now.
