The British seaside resort has long had a penchant for neon – and now it’s added 30 more dazzling light installations to its repertoire by artists including Tracey Emin, Gavin Turk and François. They’ve set argon works aglow inside the Grundy Art Gallery. Guardian photographer Christopher Thomond went to check them out.

The Spaces contributor Richard John Seymour turned his lens on the kitsch and colourful world of Yiwu’s markets for his project Commodity City. He documented just a fraction of the Chinese city’s thousands of stalls. These cavernous spaces are stacked high with knock-off Nigel soft toys, inflatable animals and synthetic flowers. Councillors made their decision based partly on the number of tragic deaths at the venue since it opened in 1999.
