Life moves slower along the shore of Tasmania’s Lettes Bay, an idyllic meeting point of water and bushland that throngs with natural wildlife. Pretty cottage Bushy Summers has a front-row seat on all the action.
Historically a miner’s shack, the coal-coloured cottage was restored by artist Matthew Usmar Lauder and designer Claire Lloyd in 2018 as a creative hideaway. Now they’re parting ways with the photogenic retreat, privately, for $595,000 AUD.
Named after an eccentric former owner, Bushy Summers is the most private shack in the bay and a simple and cosy space with inspiring views. It has been a popular holiday let in the last few years (it’s ranked ‘one of the most loved homes on Airbnb based on ratings, reviews, and reliability’), and though it’s only 37 sqm in size, it’s perfectly formed. The kitchen opens onto the outdoors and has white-washed shiplap (which runs throughout the cottage) and matching cabinetry, wooden worktops and stainless steel appliances.
The light-drenched living area and front porch both look onto the bay and are tranquil spots to watch the world go by or enjoy a good book. And the Strahan shack’s lone bedroom is similarly quaint, with a wrought-iron bedframe nodding to the cottage’s heritage and a roll-top bath for long and relaxing soaks in the bathroom.
