Art, design and fine dining are on the menu at Athens restaurant Gallina, helmed by Chef Pavlos Kiriakis and designed by architects Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis.
Petaloti and Trampoukis are the founders of New York and Athens-based firm LOT office for architecture and design studio Objects of Common Interest. The pair have taken their cross-disciplinary approach to crafting the restaurant’s interiors, which feature a gallery-quality art collection and bespoke furniture befitting Gallina’s location in the artsy Koukaki neighbourhood.
While intimate at just 38 covers, the restaurant belies its 105 sq m footplate by exaggerating the height of the space. Floor-to-ceiling black steel-framed windows and tall, vertical artworks train the eye upwards, including a vibrant hand-knotted tapestry by artist Jannis Varelas and a neon tubular light sculpture by Objects of Common Interest which bends its way to the ceiling.
Other artworks on show include a painting by Stelios Faitakis, a bronze sculpture by Rallou Panagiotou, and a tongue-in-cheek sign by Olga Migliaressi-Phoca. At first glance, it looks like an ‘exit’ lightbox, but instead, it’s inscribed with the word ‘SEXIST’ in all caps. The varied display reflects restaurant owner Philippos Tsangrides’s personal art collection and favours contemporary Greek artists.
Custom-made marble tabletops, terrazzo flooring – also designed by artist Vasilis Papageorgiou – plus rich wood panelling (illuminated by Charlotte Perriand-designed wall sconces) and steel-framed chairs heighten the midcentury modern vibe.
Above the dining room is a mezzanine, accessed by a sleek stainless-steel staircase in the back. This intimate nook is reserved for private dining and wine tasting—with built-in shelving displaying the restaurant’s expansive wine collection.
