Ayton Castle in Berwickshire stands among the key works of the Scots Baronial style. Designed in 1845 by Gothic Revival architect James Gillespie Graham, it was his final major work and remains a monument to the romantic imagination of the era. Built from deep red sandstone, the castle rises with turrets, crenellated parapets, crow-step gables and a soaring five-storey tower — a commanding silhouette on the Borders landscape.

The estate extends across 160 acres of listed gardens and woodland, landscaped with sweeping lawns and terraces. A restored 16th-century dovecote, a subterranean ice house and a stable block with stalls for nine horses speak to the site’s layered history. Inside, 17 bedrooms and nine bathrooms unfold across grand principal rooms, with south-facing views, a private chapel and broad turnpike staircases. A total of eight reception rooms welcome visitors, while estate cottages, lodges and flats extend accommodation beyond the main house.
Together they compose a landmark estate with architectural and historical weight. On the market with Knight Frank for £3.25m, Ayton offers more than just a home — it is an opportunity to own one of Scotland’s defining baronial estates.
