Nestled into a hillside garden within a private forest, the Grand Hôtel Belvédère is the first five-star hotel in the small Bernese village of Wengen, Switzerland, and it openes this summer. Set across two buildings, it offers 90 woody guest rooms in heritage colours overlooking the exquisite Lauterbrunnen Valley. The two wings have been reimagined as minimalist havens by Geneva architecture and interiors practice Complete Works in collaboration with designer Valéry Clavien.
The design team took inspiration from the Heimatstil style of alpine Switzerland and used natural materials in their work, from parquet flooring and green granite to thick wool upholsteries. In the spa, they created a tranquil forest retreat with nods to Japanese onsen. Beyond the four treatment cabins, saunas and hammam are an indoor pool and outdoor infinity pool.
A car-free resort reached by a small cogwheel train, Wengen is known by Brits as one of the first destinations for recreational skiing. The area enjoys vast stretches of ski terrain, with views of Jungfrau and the Lauterbrunnen valley.
The Belvédère’s parent company, Beaumier, also plans to reopen its Provençal villa Capelongue this year, following an addition and redesign by architectural practice Jaune. The new 57-room hotel will open on 1 May.
