A converted post office is for sale in the Suffolk market town of Saxmundham

Old Victorian lettering above the front door is a testament to this Suffolk property’s life as a post office and general store for the bustling market town of Saxmundham.

The Old Post Office dates from the early 19th century and is located on the busy high street, where it served the Saxmundham community for over a century. The town is close to the Suffolk Coast and predates the reign of William the Conqueror, though its streetscape is mostly a tapestry of Georgian, Elizabethan and Victorian architecture. It’s into this mould the 3,000 sq ft building fits snugly, with its period facade still bearing the original (albeit aged) signage proclaiming its use.

An art gallery currently inhabits the old storefront, with living accommodation above (accessed at the rear of the property) and a large cellar below. The building has been modernised, but it is packed with original features like brick chimneys (fitted with new wood burners), corbelling and picture rails in the living room and stripped floorboards throughout, which result in a rich patina that flows from room to room.

Inigo is marketing the historic four-bedroom Suffolk property for £725,000. Take a closer look at the gallery above.
