This 19th-century former coach house in Staffordshire may have been built for horses but it would make a fine place to call home.

The Grade II-listed, sandstone-clad structure was once part of the Tixall Hall estate – held for almost 200 years by a long line of Lord Astons and then by Thomas Clifford, who married into the family.

Clifford made several additions, including the coach house, to an estate that already featured the 16th-century Tixall Gatehouse and Tixall Hall. The Gatehouse remains but the Hall was demolished in 1928.

In the 1970s, the coach house was converted into eight homes, with the largest being the four-bedroom Chaise House – now available via Reeds Rains for offers above £400,000.

Spread over three floors, the property retains many of its period features, including French leaded doors, stone flooring and early 19th-century fireplaces in several of its rooms.
