#Auctionwatch: Gallerist Alex Tieghi-Walker has curated a collection of historic design and art pieces for online marketplace 1stDibs, bringing together his love of off-kilter objects.
‘I lean towards the slightly wonky, the wabi sabi: wobbly, rusty, bent, mottled, chipped, burned,’ says Tieghi-Walker, who is the founder of Los Angeles craft gallery and online store Tiwa Select.
His auction collection brings this to the fore with an eclectic mix of objects ancient and less so, including a nearly 2000-year-old ceramic dog effigy, a midcentury lounge chair and a collection of Lalique fish sculptures.
Many of his chosen pieces lean into his idea of slightly lopsided craft, retaining the hand of the original creator – for example, a hand-embroidered bedspread, woven fruit baskets, vases and other ceramics with distinct patinas or irregularities.
Other items from the sale include a pair of 1960s Stillnovo wall lamps and a glossy ceramic sculpture by Steen Ipsen. Prices for lots range from £42 to £12,000, which will snag you an 1880s Persian Kermanshah rug. Tieghi-Walker’s curated auction runs for seven days, ending on 17 August 2022.
