Taliesin graduate Kaneji Domoto designed this waterfront East Hampton property, nicknamed Mermaid Ranch, in 1968.
The 2.25-acre lot is on the eastern shoreline of Three Mile Harbor, near the villages of East Hampton and Amagansett.
Domoto’s 50-year-long architecture career started at UC Berkeley before apprenticing under Frank Lloyd Wright at his Taliesin West campus. (Domoto went on to design five homes at Lloyd Wright’s experimental Usonia community.) Mermaid Ranch has hallmarks from this education, such as its free-flowing interior and exterior spaces, the treatment of light and use of clerestory windows, and giant brick fireplaces that anchor the great room.
More recently, 291 Three Mile Harbor Road was an artist and creative retreat for the bi-coastal agency Chandelier Creative and featured in Architectural Digest. Decor has changed across the four-bedroom home since.
The west-facing East Hampton property has 100 feet of harbour and sunset views. According to listing agent Compass, it ‘is also eligible to construct a larger magnificent new home with pool’, should its new owners be so inclined. Mermaid Ranch is asking $4.495m.
