Exciting news for philosophy buffs – an apartment in the Venetian home of Friedrich Nietzsche can now be yours.
Part of the 17th century Palazzo Berlendis, the apartment is situated at the end of the Rio dei Mendicanti. Nietzsche lived in the palace from 1880-1887, composing his seminal work Thus Spoke Zarathustra within its walls.
The Venice property – on the market via Engels & Völkers for €2.5 million – is filled with historical delights. It has marble floors, corniced ceilings, frescoed walls and an unusual 18th-century wooden alcove decorated by the painter Francesco Fontebasso.
More recent inhabitants have included painters and photographers, some of whom have added their own touches to the building. Napoleone Martinuzzi, a renowned 20th-century sculptor and glass artist, decorated the master bathroom of this apartment in a glass tile and gold leaf mosaic that remains in perfect condition.

While its balcony has views over Venice’s northern lagoon, towards the island of Murano,
the living room, dining room and two bedrooms occupy the main floor of the palazzo, overlooking the canal.
Rooms are linked in typical Venetian style by the ‘portego passante’, or main hall. Meanwhile, the kitchen and utilities in the Venice property are tucked on the floor below.
