Nominees for architecture’s annual bad-taste award have been revealed – but which will be crowned ‘the ugliest building in the United Kingdom?’

Building Design magazine’s Carbuncle Cup is the Razzie of the architecture industry, highlighting the worst British architecture completed in the last 12 months.

Nova Victoria by PLP Architecture – which features a disjointed pink ‘shard’ façade – is on the list, alongside Preston train station’s ‘cake tin’ entrance, designed by AHR, and a ‘gaudy’ conversion of the Park Plaza London Waterloo by ESA Architecture.

‘Our six-strong shortlist contains a mix of buildings types of differing scales and demonstrates that buildings don’t have to be big to be bad and that poor-quality architecture touches all building types,’ says BD’s editor Thomas Lane.

Also nominated is Battersea’s Circus West by Simpson Haugh, which ‘pulls off the feat of making Europe’s largest brick building look small and was a very popular nomination with the BD readership,’ said Lane.

Rounding off the pack is Cooley Architect’s Greetham Street Student Halls in Portsmouth – which has earned the insalubrious nickname, ’the fag butt’, thanks to its cigarette-like cap – and a Lego-like extension by Vivid Architects in Malvern.

The shortlist was compiled by the BD editorial team and readers, as well as Twentieth Century Society director Catherine Croft, and Urbed director and chair of the Academy of Urbanism David Rudlin.

The 2017 Carbuncle Cup winner will be announced next Wednesday.

Previous winners include Rafael Viñoly’s Walkie Talkie skyscraper in London – which famously melted a car with its ‘death-ray’ reflections – and the Lincoln Plaza in the London Docklands, dubbed the ‘type of project that gives high-rise housing a bad name.’ Ouch.
