This time-capsule modernist bungalow comes in at under $2 million

The John Stroh design has its original wood siding and verdigris trim

The layout of this midcentury bungalow in the hills near Ojai is one of its greatest assets. Designed in the 1950s by California modernist John Stroh of Wilson, Stroh & Wilson, it brings people together in open spaces yet offers a remarkable sense of privacy with pocket doors and a separate bedroom wing.

Located in the ‘Oaks’ neighborhood of Santa Paula, the property is blessed with high ceilings, walls of glass and clerestory windows. Original walnut panelling is consistent throughout the house, and incorporates built-in bookshelves with deep storage in the lounge. The dining room and eat-in kitchen can be closed off to the lounge with shoji doors, a telltale detail of the architect’s. They also benefit from a pantry, utility room and doors to the rear terrace and deck.

A long windowed corridor leads down to four bedrooms, and original bathrooms fitted with new penny-tile floors.

Sotheby’s has listed the house and its retro carport, along with nearly half an acre of lawns bounded by mature California oaks. The asking price? $1,989,000.
