Four and half thousand tons of earth were evacuated from a clifftop location on the Greek island of Milos to make space for this underground property.

For sale for €5.5 million via Greece Sotheby’s International Realty, the seven-bedroom island property has a single linear façade on ground level facing the Aegean Sea while the rest of it has been built into the earth.

Strict planning rules limiting property size were circumvented by setting the home below ground level, making it almost invisible in the landscape while having the benefit of keeping the house’s temperature constant.

Views of the sky can be seen through five sunken windows in the roof of the Christos Vlachos-designed house while its all-white exterior reflects the luminous light and contrasts against Milos’s famous colourful rocky landscapes.
