June 9th, 1PM, Le Plongeoir Have lunch along the waterfront at Plongeoir, an establishment that’s been in Nice since 1884. In those days, it consisted of a wooden caravel and a two-story gazebo and was the place to go for tea. In 1941, the fishing boat was damaged and the architect René Livieri created an Art Deco style diving board with a spiral staircase, as well as a beach restaurant, which replaced the gazebo. After being closed for 15 years, Marc Dussoulier took over this mythical place that had been frequented by generations of Nice residents. Le Plongeoir reopened in 2015 after undergoing several years of construction. Chef Gregory Melani’s menu is simple yet effective. Beautiful interior of the house of Kunio Maekawa – one of the most influential Japanese modernist architects who was also the apprentice of Le Corbusier. This house was built in 1942, and then relocated and preserved as one of the properties in the Edo Open Air Museum in Tokyo. As Londoners, we're a lucky bunch, with many world-class museums in the city we can visit for free. I had a really fulfilling day exploring the V&A Museum, marveling at the paintings from my favourite British artists such as John Constable and J.M.W. Turner. Waking up in Providence, care of the little village who knew what a solo staycation would mean to me. It was the perfect way to kick off my birthday week. .
