The Rockwell Group debuts a new look for a Mallorcan posada

This 1576 mansion on a cool, narrow alleyway in old Palma was already a successful boutique hotel when owners Ignacio Jiménez and Carmen Cordón entered into a second renovation of the historic Mallorcan property. The Hidden Away Hotels cofounders enlisted the international design and architecture studio Rockwell Group to refresh Posada Terra Santa’s Gothic arches and cobbled floors with light, luxurious furnishings and clean architectural finishes.

The design firm—which has a studio in Madrid as well as New York—took inspiration from the building’s coat of arms, preserved on the hotel’s facade, by playing up the hotel’s heritage vibrant terracotta-coloured plaster with layers of woven texture and art and craft from the Balearic Islands. Raw woods, natural stone, unglazed oversized ceramics and neutral upholsteries balance the dramatic winding staircase and traditional shuttered windows. Modular furnishings can move around the multifunctional salons and dining areas, adapting to season and occasion.

Traditional ikat fabrics called Mallorca Llegües were introduced in bold cobalt blue across the rooftop pool, lounge and restaurant. And in the 26 guest rooms, Rockwell Group riffed on the ubiquitous terracotta with deeper reds and pinks—primarily in the tapestry headboards, tables and textural wall coverings. In place of popular marble in the bathrooms, the practice chose vanities in local travertine with wood accents.

The four-star Mallorcan hotel is close to the impressive Santa Eulàlia de Ciutat de Mallorca Chuleta church and the ancient Plaça de la Porta del Camp.
