The house Jean Nouvel designed aged 25 is for sale

Oblique House is all about the angles

Louvre Abu Dhabi architect Jean Nouvel was just 25 years old when he designed this French property while working in the office of Claude Parent, the father of ‘oblique function’.

Oblique House is situated 20 minutes outside Villeneuve-sur-Lot in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of southwestern France, embodying principles of dynamic and engaging space design. Built in 1973, it is a collaborative project between Nouvel and architects Roland Baltera and François Seigneur, all of whom were part of Parent’s agency at the time. It implements Parent’s avant-garde principles of ‘Oblique Living’—a theory he developed with Paul Virilio in 1964, advocating for the use of tilted and angled planes to create more dynamic and engaging spaces that stimulate the building’s inhabitants.

The 170 sq m home has had three owners over the past 50 years and has been altered and adapted, but it remains ‘one of the only applications of the oblique function on a housing scale in France’, according to listing agent Architecture de Collection, which is selling the property exclusively for €690,000.

Although originally designed for a couple, it has been modified to accommodate a family of four, with living spaces almost all on one level. Two bedrooms are located on the west side of the home and shared spaces on the east. The main area includes two lounge spaces, characterised by distinctive angled concrete pillars and sloping glass planes, separated by the dining area. Above, accessed by a ladder, is a floating mezzanine level that creates a visually compelling layering effect.

Sliding glass doors open to the garden and terraces, one of which features a swimming pool. There is also an office area with independent access and a separate three-car garage. Materials contribute to the dynamism with extensive use of exposed concrete and fixtures, all following the angular principles of the house’s design—peek inside this remarkable home in the gallery above.
