Richard Neutra epitomises Californian Modernism, and his homes are standout pieces of architecture across Palm Springs and Hollywood. Luckily for us, he was a prolific architect, which means that admirers of his work aren’t short of an opportunity to own one. Here’s four of the best Neutra homes for sale right now.
Corwin House, Connecticut, $2.7m
Richard Neutra designed the majority of his homes in California, but he also completed two properties in Connecticut – one of which is for sale for the first time. The riverside Corwin House dates back to 1955 and is a well-preserved, including interior decor. Neutra’s signature glass walls and painted brickwork all remain intact, as does bespoke midcentury cabinetry.
It’s up for sale via Compass for $2.7m, but comes with one major caveat – its original owner is seeking a life estate with purchase. Peek inside the time capsule home.
Taylor House, Los Angeles, $1.75m
Neutra’s architectural goal of connecting man with nature is at its best at this home in the heart of the Verdugo Mountains Open Space Preserve. Full-length windows look out onto the huge oak trees that surround the property, and wrap-around views of the nearby ocean.
The two-bedroom home – listed for $1.75m via Crosby Doe – might be compact, but has plenty of classic midcentury features including vintage cabinets and wood panelling. Read more about it.
Coe House, Long Beach, $1.95m
If you’re looking for original details, this two-bedroom home in California’s Rolling Hills community has plenty to offer. Beamed ceilings, hardwood floors, built-in cabinetry and seating are all still intact at the midcentury property, which is listed for $1.95m via Remax Estate Properties.
Ribbon windows at the front of the property peek onto the home’s tree-lined plot, but at the back, it’s all about the ocean views. Take a closer look.
Lovell Health House, LA, POR
Neutra fans in need of a restoration project, look no further. The owners of his 1929 Lovell Health House in Los Angeles are on the hunt for someone to restore the ageing home, which is in desperate need of a refurb. It was designed for naturopathic health-guru Phillip Lovell and has plenty of original features still intact – including the outdoor porches designed for nude sunbathing. Despite needing work, the modernist property still cuts a striking figure with its grid of steel-framed windows. The owners are opening up the home for private tours, giving would-be buyers a chance to size the property up first.
